June 6th @ 9:45am – OK, I know scientists aren’t the only ones who collect acronyms like loose change, but most locations, devices, and procedures on this expedition need a name, and acronyms DO make the conversation more efficient – provided you’re up to speed on the lingo.
Here is a prime example… We’ve arrived at ODP 1027 on the NEPTUNE Network and after a CTD cast we’ll take ROPOS down to sample CORK 1026 before deploying the ROCLS to lay the cable for the first of four BPRs comprising the SPLAT.
(Admittedly, I made the last one up… how about… “Submarine PLatform for the Analysis of Tsunamis”?)
One of the most common questions I’ve asked others aboard the ship is “What does that stand for?”, but I bear witness to the fact that you can learn to speak the language.
