HAPPY WORLD OCEANS DAY!

June 8th @ 9:00am – First proposed by Canada in 1992, and officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008, World Oceans Day is designed to focus us all on the health of our oceans, encourage us to explore our personal connection with the sea, and to get us thinking collectively and creatively about how we can better manage our ocean resources.

This year’s theme is:
“Youth: The Next Wave For Change”

Celebrating World Oceans Day helps all of us to

Gain Perspective...
What does the ocean mean to you? You have a personal stake in the health and future of the ocean.

Learn...
Discover the amazing diversity of life in the oceans and consider how our daily activities can help, but can also hurt sea life.

Develop More Ocean-Friendly Habits...
There are many small changes you can make in your own backyard that will help improve the long-term health of our oceans.

Why Should You Care About the Oceans?

  • Microscopic photosynthetic plankton (phytoplankton) in the oceans generate most of the oxygen we breathe.
  • The oceans help feed us.
  • The oceans regulate our planetary and regional climate.
  • The ocean offers us vast potential for developing new medicines.
  • Oceans are inspiring and good for the soul!

How Can You Get Involved in the Celebration?

  • Tune into the ‘Wiring the Abyss 2012’ expedition website and follow along as the marine scientists and ocean engineers expand the network, and see what life aboard an oceanographic research ship is like.
  • Write a personal statement about your connection to the oceans, and why you think they are worth the hard work necessary to keep them healthy and protected. Send your ideas to your local Member of Parliament or Senator, and urge them to support legislation that benefits better understanding and stewardship of the oceans.
  • On June 8th, spend some time near the sea by yourself or with loved ones if you can, and meditate on, or talk about, what the world’s oceans give you.
  • Spread the word about ocean conservation and sustainable management by “Wearing Blue and Telling Two’… putting on something blue to show your support for healthy and sustainable treatment of our oceans, and telling two other people about World Oceans Day.
