Connecting with educators in New York State

On June 12th at 6am Maia and I had a virtual presentation with teachers in three different cities in New York State. The presentation was coordinated by NYSERNet; an organization which fosters science education in New York State by promoting the use of cutting-edge network technology in classrooms. Speaking to teachers from three different cities from a research ship doing offshore operations is actually a perfect example of this high tech sharing of knowledge.

The connection was great. Maia provided insight about Ocean Networks Canada and the NEPTUNE Canada: Wiring the Abyss 2012 installation and maintenance cruise. With the aid of a portable video conferencing system, she gave them a live tour of the deck and science lab. I provided insight about the Ship2Shore marine educator program. They had questions such as: how to use marine science in their classrooms; will the experiences in marine education program be developed as a lesson plan afterwards; what kind of science activities can be created in marine sciences. They were very interested in the program and also in incorporating marine science further in K-12 curricula. Our delightful conversation showed how receptive they were for a possible collaboration in the future.
